God always knows what He’s doing. I don’t just say that as a churchy cliché. I really mean that. HE KNOWS!
I was not a part of the writing session that “God of Victory” came out of, however, I am the one chosen to lead it. At a time where my mental struggles were seemingly getting the best of me, I get the call to lead a song that speaks of the victory we have in Jesus no matter what we’re facing.
A giant, an army, a weapon, a battle, a fight, a war, thoughts of suicide, rejection, not mattering much or feeling good enough. The latter half of the previous sentence… was me.
As a child, I never had a father to protect me, so it was difficult for me to understand the love of a heavenly father that I had heard so much about. There were moments when I prayed for answers to my questions about why I had to grow up without a father, or why I never felt good enough, or why I was so afraid to take risks. These questions caused me to doubt my relationship with God because I wasn't receiving any answers. I even went through a period of deconstruction and was easily swayed by new doctrines that seemed to offer what I thought I wanted and needed to hear. I became so absorbed in these ideas that I was afraid to open up to anyone about what I was going through, for fear of being judged and rejected.
During Easter of 2022, Victory Church presented a production that portrayed the story of Easter from the perspective of doubting Thomas.
One scene in particular showed Jesus asking Thomas to touch his scars and wounds saying, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe."
As I watched from the stage, I experienced a moment of realization. I realized that every time I have ever needed God, He has been there for me. I could vividly remember all the times I prayed in the name of Jesus and how something miraculous happened. I could see the evidence of an undefeated God at work in my life, not just in that present moment but in every moment before.
I couldn't think of any struggle that He hadn't helped me overcome or any wound that He wasn't actively healing. Every victory I have ever experienced is marked by God. He is my Father and He fights for ME!
How amazing is it that, after a couple of years, I now have the opportunity to lead a song that serves as a reminder of who the "God of Victory" is in my life? I challenge you to approach every challenge, obstacle, and battle, no matter how big or small, with the faith of a child who knows that their father is standing in front of them, protecting them from harm.
See the Lord as your protector and know that because He is fighting for you, you already have the victory.
