Saddleback Worship
Have you ever felt like the cares of this life were too much? That the only thing left to do is give up? “I’m Coming Alive” is a cry of desperation for those seasons that seem to leave you feeling lifeless.
The truth is that every one of us have parts of ourselves that need revival. Whether it’s our marriage, ministry, body, or soul (and everything in between).
John 11 is the story of Jesus bringing Lazarus back from the dead. Lazarus’ sisters sent a messenger to Jesus, telling Him his “close friend was sick,” and Jesus was moved with compassion. Jesus performs the miracle of resurrecting his friend, but he was also resurrecting faith in His disciples. Jesus says “Lazarus has died, but I’m glad that I wasn’t there so that you can grow in faith. Let’s go to Lazarus.”
Much of “I’m Coming Alive” is an honest prayer, recognizing the work God does in us when we simply let go. I often wonder why it takes me so long to let God do what only He can do.
As we sing the verses of this song, we are declaring that God’s presence is working in the seasons of chaos and storm. His presence is also in the thick of distraction, and His voice can be heard in the moments of sheer noise. We then enter into surrender in the chorus:
Take my broken soul, have it all
Take my wandering thoughts, have control
In pursuit of finding holiness
Is the simple act of speaking less
There is a freedom that comes when we give up control. It leads to life and fullness of peace.
The song hits its climax as we sing the bridge. It becomes a moment when we start to see the benefits of surrender and alignment with Jesus:
I’m coming alive
You’re calling me out
I hear Your voice
It’s shaking the ground
When you have found life abundant, it’s hard to live any other way. When we allow Jesus to take residence in our lives, it’s possible to find streams in the desert. We have more than we could ask for, no matter the season we find ourselves in.
Saddleback Worship is a team of people relentlessly pursuing Jesus and committed to serving His church. We are a part of one church that has many locations spread out all over the world. We find great joy in knowing that no one of us is on this journey alone and we whole-heartedly champion the idea that we are better together. We are a part of God’s global church, and The heartbeat of all that we say and do is Jesus.
