People of Hope
“Only You” was the very first song our worship team wrote together back in Fall 2020. The goal of this song is to realign our hearts—to remember God’s sovereignty and faithfulness, on the best and worst days of our lives.
Fall 2020 was a challenging time for the world, and the core message of ‘Only You’ is a direct response to everything going on around us. In the midst of pain, on the darkest of days, our only hope is in Him.
You’ll notice that after we sing the chorus for the first time, the verse progression changes from starting on a minor to a major chord. We really wanted the beginning of the song to feel a bit more somber and shift upward in tone as it got to the first chorus.
We played around with several different phrases in the chorus. “Only You can _____.” There are so many things God can do, it was initially difficult to narrow down.
Ultimately we landed on truths that are accessible for every believer, no matter where they’re at in their faith journey. It starts with the truth of the gospel, that only God can heal our brokenness. From there we sing that God can win any battle and move any mountain. Our hope is that both seasoned Christians, and those who don’t know Jesus at all, might be equally stirred toward Him by this song.
We actually wrote “Only You” over two sessions, a few weeks apart. In session one we finished the verses and chorus, but came back because we felt like it needed a bridge to tie everything together.
To us, the bridge is where the song shines brightest. We don’t stop at reminding our hearts of who God is—we make a declaration because we believe those things are true.

It feels so right to invite God to move after singing about all He can do. And as we crescendo from the bridge back into the chorus, those same words we’ve already sung take on new meaning—what started as a song of remembrance becomes a victorious anthem of hope.
People of Hope is a small, but growing church in Murfreesboro, TN (just outside of Nashville). Their worship team includes a deep bench of songwriters, producers, and touring musicians from Nashville—each of them passionate about celebrating Jesus through music. People of Hope has spent the last year writing new music for the local church. Their debut single, "Only You", represents the first step in a larger mission to multiply and share the worship culture they've created in their Sunday gatherings.
